The Pirate Bay Goes Down Following Legal Pressure

The Pirate Bay Goes Down Following Legal Pressure

The Pirate Bay is suffering some temporary downtime as their bandwidth provider has stopped passing through traffic. A week ago, Hollywood got an injunction to effectively shut down the Pirate Bay by threatening its provider with huge fines. The Pirate Bayteam is currently working on a solution.

the pirate bayA few days ago we exclusively revealed that several major Hollywoodmovie studios had obtained a preliminary injunction against CyberBunker operator CB3ROB Ltd. & Co. KG from the Regional Court of Hamburg.

The injunction, which was granted without an oral hearing, stated that CB3ROB and Managing Director Sven Olaf Kamphuis were now prohibited from connecting The Pirate Bay website and its servers to the Internet.

yesterday Kamphuis officially confirmed receiving the injunction and has decided to stop routing The Pirate Bay’s traffic until his lawyers have carefully read and reviewed the legal documents. This decision hasresulted in downtime for the world’s largest BitTorrent site.

A Pirate Bay insider told TorrentFreak that they are not planning to wait for a decision from the Cyberbunker team, and that they’ve already set the backup process in motion which will bring the site back online. The Pirate Bay’s servers are untouched and getting the site up and running only requires the routing (IP-tunnel) to go through anotherprovider.

It may take several hours before this process has been completed and before all ISPs see the new AS-path. TorrentFreak was assured, however, that things will return to normal as soon as possible, probably within hours.

Ever since The Pirate Bay’s servers were raided back in 2006, the operators of the site have taken extreme measures to ensure that there are proper backup mechanisms in place and that the locations of the servers are well concealed. Where the servers are actually located remains a mystery.

Update: The site is still offline after a few hours. The Pirate Bay teams is working hard on getting it back up but there’s no ETA.

Update: The site is back (tpb blog) for most people now. The Pirate Party is the new host.

Report: Facebook caught sharing secret data with advertisers

Report: Facebook caught sharing secret data with advertisers

The privacy issues that have been hounding Facebook may be coming to a head. A report in the Wall Street Journal indicates that the Facebook, along with MySpace, Digg, and a handful of other social-networking sites, have been sharing users' personal data with advertisers without users' knowledge or consent.

The data shared includes names, user IDs, and other information sufficient to enable ad companies such as the Google-owned DoubleClick to identify distinct user profiles. Some of the sites in question, including MySpace and Facebook, stopped sharing the data after the Journal asked them about it. The surreptitious data sharing was first noticed (PDF) byresearchers from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and AT&T Labs in August 2009, who brought it up with the sites in question. It wasn't until WSJ contacted them that changes were made.

Not surprisingly, Facebook appears to have gone farther than the other sites when it comes to sharing data. When Facebook's users clicked on ads appearing on a profilepage, the site would at times provide data such as the username behind the click, as well as the user whose profile page from which the click came. "If you are looking at yourprofile page and you click on an ad, you are telling that advertiser who you are,"Harvard Business School professor Ben Edelman told the Journal. Advertisers contacted by the paper said that they were unaware of the additional data and did not make use of it.

Facebook has tweaked its privacy policy throughout its history, with the most recent moves to open up more user information to the public drawing heavy criticism and FTC complaints. Users have also had a tough time navigating the site's often-Byzantine privacy controls, which has led to a trickle of user defections. With these latest revelations about Facebook ignoring industry standards, not to mention its own privacypolicies, that trickle may turn into a torrent.

Google AdSense - A newbie's perspective

Google AdSense - A newbie's perspective

If you have spent nights tossing and turning in bed over the check that "this lucky guy" received from Google, this is the right post for you! Before you register a domain name and enroll in the AdSense program, there are a few things that you should consider.. and even before that, you need to know what AdSense program is all about.
What is AdSense Program
AdSense is an ad serving program created to show ads on webpages. Website owners who feel that they have sufficient traffic (visitors) on their website can enroll in this program which enables them to display ads which are relevant to the overall context of the website. The ads are displayed in various formats such as text, image and video.
How can we generate revenue from AdSense
Revenue can be generated from AdSense in two ways:
  1. Per-click
  2. Per-impression
Per-click means that the owner gets a certain amount of revenue when the website viewers click on the ads. How much value a "click" has depends on various factors such as the geographic location of the visitor & ad content.
Per-impression means that an advertiser pays for every 1000 times a website visitor views their ad. This 1000 views is considered one impression.
Where does this revenue come from
The source of all AdSense income is the AdWords program which is for the advertisers. Those wishing to advertise their products or services may enroll in the AdWords program. Advertisers specify the keywords that should trigger their ads and the maximum amount they will pay per click. When a user makes a search on the search engine Google, relevant ads are displayed as sponsored links.
On site-targeted advertising, advertisers can enter domain names, topics and demographic targeting preferences and their ads are then displayed on the relevant content network. The advertiser may chooseto bid on cost-per-impression or cost-per-click basis, depending upon their preference.
Who is Google AdSense Program for
AdSense program is for website owners who truly feel that their website contains genuine and valuable content. By "valuable", I mean content which attracts a lot of people, hence driving a lot of traffic to the website.
A newbie's perspective by Omar Chaudary
I signed up for Google AdSense program almost a year ago, and I have two websites displaying Google ads, but I never earned a lot. The reason why I was unable to generate a lot of revenue is that my websites do no have a specific topic. They contain software bundles, music, photos, movies, articles, eBooks, games, mobile applications and porn - all of it! There is no certain category where my website falls. My website visitors are people looking for pirated stuff, and those who do not wish to pay for the services they receive.
So my biggest problem was target audience. How can I generate revenue from my website when I have no specific target audience. Anyone can bump into my website; a preacher looking for electronic version of The Holy Bible or a porn addict!
The importance of an idea!
In order to successfully run a website or an online business, you have to have an idea which clicks. I, being a newbie, did not have a great idea. I was using an obsolete database, a substandard hosting service and content which is now considered junk by most standards. For example, I was posting articles which contained links to files uploaded on rapidshare. Now those files were often broken down into five parts or even eleven parts at times. Why would anyone wish to download a file in five pieces when they have access to torrents Were my websites making lives easier for my users No. Infact, when I checked back after a few months, most of the rapidshare links I'd posted on my websites had become invalid because the files were removed due to copyright conflicts.
Time
Developing quality content for website requires time. Like most people, I was in a haste to make money from my websites without any consideration for quality of content. I had been misguided into believing that if my website contains more relevant keywords, my search engine ranking will go up and I'll get a lot of traffic in no time. This is absolutely wrong. There is no use of traffic which cannot be sustained. The only way to sustain traffic is to generate valuable and quality content which your viewers will genuinely appreciate. Creating such content takes a lot of time and effort on your part. There is no point in setting up a website if you do not have content for it.
Should I join AdSense
If you are not a creative person with a desire to create interesting content, or someone not willing to invest time and effort into work and just trying to generate a source of passive income.. you should NOT join the AdSense program. You'll only end up wasting a lot of time and leaving more search-engine spam for internet users to deal with!
